Sid Meier has a posse.

Shepard Fairey’s Civilization Revolution artwork 2K Games has a pretty rad promotion going on for its upcoming Civilization Revolution, a console take on the long-running game series. Shepard Fairey (you know, the guy behind the now-ubiquitous “OBEY” street art campaign) designed a badass poster featuring series standby Napoleon. Check it out at the official site in the “download” section. Credit at 2K should go to community manager extraordinaire Elizabeth Tobey.

I played Civilization Revolution a few months ago. It seems very promising to me. Civilization–the first one–was one of the games that really turned me into a hardcore gamer. I had played PC games before then (didn’t have any consoles until the mid-90s), mainly adventure games, but Civilization was the kind of consuming addiction that set off what has since become a lifetime hobby.

Revolution is actually the first game in the series truly helmed by creator Sid Meier since that original game, and he is said to have done the prototyping himself. It has been simplified in some ways from the later releases, which seems appropriate to me, as it is a spin-off rather than a direct continuation. I would also point to the original game, which is clearly more simplified relative to the later games but as far as I’m concerned remains quite playable. Revolution takes the series concept down to more of its essence, with the benefit of years of design hindsight making it more of a streamlining than a whittling away.

The most exciting part is the DS version, which from what I’ve been told is identical in gameplay terms to the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions. From what I played, that seems to be the case. Plus, I’m a huge pixel art fan, and it’s great seeing a much more polished version of those original sprite-based visuals that got me into this stuff in the first place. I was a big fan of Age of Empires on DS, which as far as I’m concerned is quite underrated, but Civ on the DS is almost too good to be true.
